Fashion
In fashion magazines, conventions are shown through bold mastheads, innovations in garments and design, celebrities and promotion for the garment brand or a career choice, trends, and are always bold, recognizable, and eye catching. Whether its through the use of photography, color or pattern, the garment itself, the design and or layout depends on the magazine.
In this example of British Vogue above, the use of the limited color design stands out as well as, the shape of the clothes displayed. The green masthead "British VOGUE" chosen (my assumption) because of green being a complementary color to the red glove, opposites on the color wheel and therefore eye catching. Using bold or only a few colors or complementary colors is a convention in fashion magazines.
In fashion magazines featuring models and or celebrities, they many times have a bold font of their name being in the headline or relating to them in some way. In the issue above of GQ circa 2022 the british actor Robert Pattinson is the focus the headline being "Who is Robert Pattinson?" in a bold and unique font. Underneath the cover I found a page spread of the feature article including the modeling of him as seen in the pictures. Bold, unique, random, or eye catching editorial photography (photos meant to accompany text in publications to tell a story, illustrate an article, or communicate a mood.) is also a convention in fashion magazines.
Food
In food magazines, conventions are shown through delicious looking photography on covers, bold head and cover lines of recipes, lures like "10+ recipes so easy 10 minutes!", seasonal dishes, restaurant commentary or reviews, the culture involving food, latest trends in food, and chef interviews or testimony and all of this shown very structured in layout.
Convention in food magazines are very bold mastheads similar to fashion magazines also wanting to garner attention but food magazines have no human subject on the main cover image besides a picture of maybe a chef or baker in the banner of the bottom on the cover. They have buzz words in the puffs or plugs near the cover lines. A main convention is the cover, a delicious looking cover is a pillar convention in food magazines but, throughout a food magazine a convention is the use of photography. An example here of food magazines use of image is this book of "Food Network Magazine The Big, Fun Book of Fun Fake-Out Cakes 75+" it shows the end product cake looking like a sushi roll and the step by step recipe and visual decoration guide through picture.
Horror
In horror magazines they have a convention of using dark colors (black, red, white etc...), high contrast in lighting, similar to food magazines they have a reliance on pictures, very bold mastheads, and a need for imagery and most times humor when doing commentary on media in text.
Above is an issue of Scream magazine number twenty eight from 2015. The conventions shown are the bold masthead and coverlines, and high contrast lighting for the movies and horror media advertised in the magazine.https://www.scfarrow.com/genre-tropes-and-conventions
